Validation Trends for Hospital Quality Measures

Overall, Idaho and Washington hospitals earn high marks for accurately processing the data associated with the nationwide quality measure initiatives.

Medicare verifies a set of each sampled hospital's quarterly data submissions; results of that validation process are summarized below:

How the validation process works

Across the nation, hospitals report specific quality measures to the QIO Clinical Warehouse in support of such initiatives as the Hospital Compare website.

Previously, a sampling of all reporting hospitals' data were validated. However, starting in the second quarter of 2011, only 800 of the reporting hospitals are randomly selected for validation each year.

The CMS Clinical Data Abstraction Center (CDAC) randomly selects a sample (12 records) from each of the chosen hospitals’ previous quarterly data submissions to be re-abstracted and reviewed.

In order to pass validation, a hospital must achieve a validation rate of 75% or above. If the validation rate is less than 75%, the hospital has 10 business days from the date that the result was posted to submit an appeal.

Qualis Health reviews Idaho and Washington hospitals' appeals and makes the final determination. As needed, we provide education to help the hospital refine related processes in order to improve future validation scores.
